Expedition Aims

Climbing Objectives in Graham Land

There have been very few mountaineering expeditions to Antarctica. The difficulties of access and remoteness coupled with the challenges of the cold and weather that can change by the minute has deterred most climbers over the years.

There has been a growing interest in the 21st century in the mountaineering possibilities in Antarctica. Huge areas of unexplored glaciers ringed by unclimbed peaks throw up an obvious challenge to adventurous mountaineers.

After our 500 mile journey aboard Pelagic across the Southern Ocean, we will set up a base camp on the boat in Darbel Bay. From there we intend to establish ourselves on land and make the journey over two or three days up one of the glaciers into the heart of the Peninsula, where we will establish an advanced base camp.

From this camp we hope to explore and make ascents of some of the many unclimbed peaks in the area. Most of these peaks are not even marked on any maps, but obvious objectives include some of the prominent peaks such as Slessor peaks, and Zilva peaks.
